Suzart in the Eastern Ontario Drama League Spring Festival

Suzart entered “Once Upon A Mattress” in the EODL Full Length Spring Festival this year. EODL stands for Eastern Ontario Drama League and is a section of Theatre Ontario. There are 39 member groups of EODL stretching from Belleville to Cornwall. Five of these groups chose to enter the Festival this year: Domino Theatre from Kingston, Peterborough Theatre Guild, Ottawa Little Theatre, Tara Players and Suzart Productions. Suzart entered with the sole hope of spreading our name a little wider. Like all groups, we received a very worthwhile public and private adjudication and were thankful for all the comments the adjudicator, Bea Quarrie, had to make.
Elaine and I attended the awards ceremony this past Sunday in Kemptville and I am very proud to give you the results. The adjudicator had some very kind words to say about Suzart as an organization and what we do for the community and youth in particular. There are 15 awards and we received six nominations in five categories. For Best Use of Speech four groups were nominated including Suzart’s Kathleen Arbour as the Minstrel. For Grace Under Pressure, Suzart’s entire team was nominated for the grace in which we moved 60 people around the stage. For Ensemble Work, Suzart’s orchestra under the direction of John McGovern was nominated. For Overcoming Unsurmountable Odds, Suzart’s cast and orchestra was nominated. And, finally, for Best Cameo role, Suzart received two of three nominations: Barbara Seabright-Moore for Queen Aggravaine and Barry Caiger as the Wizard. And I am very pleased and proud to announce that Barry Caiger won the Ron Hazelgrove Award for Best Cameo Performance.
We are thrilled that we won an award, especially as a relatively unknown group with its first festival entry. Congratulations to all involved in Once Upon A Mattress. It was truly a team
effort and we are very proud. Extra special kudos to Barry.

Suzart wins 2008 ShowTune Showdown

Suzart's team of Caroline Stevens, Paul Grant, Kathleen Arbour, and Kraig-Paul Proulx participated in Tone Cluster's Showtune Showdown on April 5, 2008. Also competeing were Sock ‘n’ Buskin Theatre Company, and Zucchini Grotto Theatre Company, returning to defend their title.

The competition was fierce. Judge Kathleen Petty was reduced to tears more than once by the performances of the teams, and Kraig-Paul's rousing Bigger Is Better. But in the end, Team Suzart was victorious, with help from Suzartians Les Hope, singing Don't Cry for Me Argentina, and Dani Bone, singing Hey, Big Spender in the audience participation rounds.

Well done, Team Suzart.
